About Us

Our Story

The Scripps National Spelling Bee in Nigeria is made possible through the partnership between the Young Educators Foundation, Ghana, and Lucid Education Initiative, Nigeria.

Young Educators Foundation (YEF) is an educational consultancy based in Ghana and registered as an NGO. Our work focuses on developing and improving literacy skills among young people from 8 to 18 years old.

We also provide training for teachers in the field of literacy, mainly spelling and reading. Our belief is that learning should be child-led, especially in this 21st century where younger generations are exposed to a plethora of information but need guidance.

In this regard, YEF, for close to 2 decades, has been running complementary literacy programmes; notable among them is The National Spelling Bee-GH.

Current TNSB Champion's Bio

Giovanni Adjei, 2024 (current) National Spelling Bee Champion!

Giovanni Adjei, a 10-year-old student from Christ The King International School, emerged victorious at The National Spelling Bee 2024 Finals by accurately spelling “guijo,”  a notable Philippine timber tree known for its robust and heavy hardwood, characterized by a distinctive figure and moderately fine texture. This marks Giovanni’s second appearance in The Bee.

Aside from his academic pursuits, Giovanni indulges in playing the keyboard and soccer, all while nurturing his passion for reading. With a personal goal of consuming over 200 words daily, he also clinched the top spot in his group during the recent UCMAS competition. Fascinated by the pre-colonial history of Sierra Leone, Giovanni aspires to visit the country someday.

A prominent figure in his school’s drama club, Giovanni’s meticulous preparation for the Bee undoubtedly contributes to his success. Dreaming of a stint as an actor to leverage his drama club skills, he finds joy in mastering complex words, with a particular fondness for the word “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.”

Our Convener's Speech

It is an absolute honor to welcome you to this historic moment in our nation’s educational journey. Today, we stand on the cusp of an incredible milestone as Nigeria officially joins the global family of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, a platform that has, for nearly a century, celebrated the intellect, dedication, and tenacity of young minds across the world.

The story of how we arrived here today is one of vision, perseverance, and a deep-seated belief in the power of education. It began with the Young Educators Foundation’s unwavering mission to empower young learners by providing them with opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. This mission led to the acquisition of the Scripps franchise for Ghana nearly two decades ago, making Ghana the first African nation to participate in this prestigious competition. Over the years, Ghana’s Spellers have demonstrated that Africa’s youth are not only eager to compete but also to excel on the global stage……
